Still standing
Brick fort begun in 1829 on a man-made shoal at the harbor entrance and still unfinished in 1861. Bombarded into surrender on April 12-13 1861, held by the Confederates for four years, and reduced by Federal gunfire from a masonry fort to a sand-and-rubble earthwork. Never taken by assault; evacuated on the night of February 17 1865.
