With the Federal army back on the sea islands and the Confederate line drawn along the mainland creeks, the autumn of 1862 on the South Carolina coast was a season of reconnaissances and small expeditions. It ended on 22 October at Pocotaligo, where a Federal push at the railroad was thrown back.

Everything at Fort Sumter — men, water, provisions, powder, and the guns being taken out of the rubble — moved by rowboat after dark from the city and from Mount Pleasant. Beauregard’s headquarters spent as much correspondence on that boat traffic as on the batteries, because if it stopped, the fort fell.
