In twenty-four hours the Federals fired eight shots and the Confederate batteries 144. Overnight the Federals palisaded Battery Gregg and the re-entering angle of Wagner and mounted a large Parrott in the sand-hills. What looked like a masked battery was nearly finished. They were preparing to shell the city in earnest.

A memorandum for the commanding general: the works at Fort Johnson visited in company with the chief engineer. Fort Johnson, where the first shell of the war was fired, was now the anchor of the James Island line and the closest Confederate battery to the Federal guns.
