About four in the afternoon a large Federal working party was seen from Battery Haskell building on Black Island, in the marsh between Morris and James Islands. Haskell and Tatom opened with 8-inch howitzers; most of the shots fell short and many did not explode, but the work stopped for the day. Black Island became one of the batteries that shelled Charleston.

Beauregard forwarded an ordnance report to Richmond and added a line of his own: “a material saving of ammunition would be effected by sending here fuses of better quality.” Bad fuzes are the most frequent complaint in the Confederate records of the Charleston siege.
