Skirmishing on the Kilkenny River, in the sea-island country between Charleston and Savannah. In the quiet autumn of 1862 the war on this coast was a matter of boat parties, pickets and salt works.

“Enemy still silent, but working and strengthening their works on Morris Island, putting guns in position.” Captain Hale telegraphed from Sullivan’s Island that a Federal battery was going up abreast of the Beacon House with heavy Parrotts bearing on Moultrie, Haskell and Cheves. Confederate batteries fired 514 rounds at the working parties in twelve hours and did not stop them.
