The chief engineer’s office gave its opinion that the proposed bomb-proof defense of Fort Sumter “may be resorted to with good prospect of success, whenever circumstances should render it expedient.” The fort’s garrison ended up living inside a shell of sandbags, timber and rubble.

At quarter past seven in the morning the monitor USS Lehigh, on picket to watch for boats going to Cumming’s Point, was found aground opposite Fort Moultrie. Moultrie opened at once and many shots were seen to strike. She made no reply, but signaled for help, and three other monitors came up and hauled her off under fire.

The President had appointed the day for general fasting and prayer, and the Mercury announced that to let everyone connected with the establishment observe it, Thursday’s issue would be omitted. Advertisers were asked to send their favors in time for Wednesday morning.
