Federal vessels bombarded Cole’s Island at the mouth of the Stono during three days’ operations in the river. The Confederates had abandoned the island’s works that spring on Pemberton’s orders — a decision bitterly criticized in Charleston, because it opened the Stono and put the enemy on James Island within a month.

“Enemy's barges are nearly on a line with telegraph posts between here and Fort Johnson, and about one-third of distance from here. They seem still advancing.” The telegraph line laid across the harbor floor was the fort's link to the city, and the Federals hunted it.
