Commander Balch of the Pawnee reported all quiet in the Stono, General Vogdes strengthening his position on Folly Island, and a joint reconnaissance in force onto James Island under discussion. He judged the Confederate force on James Island small. Seven weeks later the army landed on Morris Island instead, and found out.

Major Basinger reported from Sullivan’s Island on the previous days’ firing: two monitors, apparently new vessels, had moved up the harbor about eleven in the morning and opened a heavy fire on the angle made by Fort Sumter’s east and northeast faces, with the Morris Island batteries co-operating. Three years into the war, the Federals were still trying to knock down what was left of the fort.
