Beauregard reported that after sending Evans’ brigade to Mississippi there were only 6,000 infantry available in the whole of South Carolina and Georgia — and Federal brigades were already visible on Folly Island.

Beauregard reported to the Secretary of War that he had sent Evans’ brigade and a regiment — 2,700 men — to Pemberton in Mississippi, “contrary to my opinion,” leaving only 6,000 infantry available in the whole of South Carolina and Georgia. The same message noted two Federal brigades on Folly Island. Vicksburg was taking the men that Charleston would need in July.
