“Everything is quiet.” Anderson reported the embrasures of the breaching battery closed with sandbags and fifty men at work enlarging the mortar battery on James Island — the strong point anchoring the line that covered Fort Johnson. Thirteen days later that mortar battery fired the signal shell over his fort.

The USS Florida, off Charleston, forwarded word that the Restless had made a capture in the passage near Cape Romain light. Above Charleston the coast is a maze of inlets, and the blockading squadron worked it constantly for small craft carrying cotton out and salt in.
