Brigadier General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard assumed command of Confederate forces at Charleston — five weeks after resigning as superintendent of West Point, where Robert Anderson had once been his artillery instructor. He set about closing the ring of batteries around his old teacher with professional thoroughness.

Union forces occupied Cheraw with skirmishing at Juniper and Thompson’s creeks. Much of Charleston’s movable wealth had been sent to Cheraw and Columbia for safekeeping ahead of the evacuation; a good deal of it was captured or burned there.
