“No easy problem”
Beauregard wrote to Congressman W. Porcher Miles: “How I can successfully defend two such important cities as Charleston and Savannah with about 25,000 men, scattered over 100 miles of country, is no easy problem.” A year earlier Lee had held the same ground with over 40,000 against a smaller enemy. Beauregard held it anyway, for two more years.
