Beauregard has nothing left to lend
Asked by D. H. Hill for help at Petersburg, Beauregard replied that having lately sent a large part of his troops to reinforce Johnston in Mississippi he could not assist until some of them came back. His “protecting wing,” he noted drily, had lately been extended over Mobile as well. Four weeks later the Federals landed on Morris Island.
