Asked by D. H. Hill for help at Petersburg, Beauregard replied that having lately sent a large part of his troops to reinforce Johnston in Mississippi he could not assist until some of them came back. His “protecting wing,” he noted drily, had lately been extended over Mobile as well. Four weeks later the Federals landed on Morris Island.

An acting master reported from the USS John Adams in Charleston Harbor on the cotton found aboard the schooner Charlotte, which he had captured up the Cooper River in March. The prize courts were still working through the last months of Charleston’s blockade long after it ended.
