“He has no guns that he can spare you”

From his Charleston headquarters Pemberton answered an engineer asking for artillery to cover a river obstruction: put the works near the guns you already have, six or seven hundred yards off — and “he has no guns that he can spare you.” Every heavy piece on this coast was spoken for twice over.
