The second series of engineering operations in the first parallel was completed — about a thousand days’ work, three-quarters of it done in darkness. Brooks noted that neither the Confederate artillery nor its sharpshooters had given serious annoyance in this period. That changed as the trenches got closer.

An officer wrote to Gillmore that the labor of moving heavy guns in the department would be greatly reduced by sling-carts with much broader wheels. Sand swallowed narrow tires; the whole Morris Island siege turned on being able to drag 200-pounder Parrotts across a beach.
