Through the summer of 1861 Charleston’s volunteer companies went to Virginia. The city that had made the war kept the war at arm’s length for another year, and the harbor batteries built in the spring settled into a long, quiet garrison routine.

At dawn the 7th Connecticut led a rush up the beach against Battery Wagner with two more regiments behind. The Connecticut men actually got onto the parapet; the supporting regiments broke under canister on the open sand. Federal loss was about 340 to the Confederates’ twelve. Gillmore concluded he had gone in too light — and a week later went in heavier.
