A Federal boat expedition pushed up to Bear Bluff on the South Carolina coast — one of dozens of small reconnaissances by which the navy learned the creeks behind the sea islands during the winter of 1861–62. The lowcountry’s rivers, not its roads, were the highways of this war.

Rain and fog hid the fleet. At half past ten at night Battery Cumming opened on the city and threw fourteen shells at five- and ten-minute intervals; seven failed to explode. At quarter past five a Federal barge used the fog to come within five hundred yards of Battery Beauregard before a sentinel saw it and a gun was fired.
