Two hundred and three shells in twenty-four hours, twenty-seven of them short. At eleven at night a fire was seen at the corner of East Bay and Broad streets and was put out within the hour. The Federals were watched swapping the small Wiard gun out of Battery Cumming for a heavier piece.

Federal troops moved up from Beaufort to Pocotaligo, skirmishing as they went, and took the position that had beaten them off in October 1862. Pocotaligo sat astride the Charleston and Savannah Railroad. From here Sherman’s right wing would turn inland — away from Charleston, toward Columbia.
