Anderson wrote hurriedly to the Chief Engineer: a joint commission was suddenly going to Washington, and he had only a few lines in which to describe his work. Three days after the Star of the West was fired on, both sides were still trying to solve Fort Sumter with lawyers.

A quantity of scrap iron and shell fragments was brought to the city from Fort Sumter overnight, and a 42-pounder smoothbore lately dug out of the rubble lay on the berm waiting for a boat. The fort had stopped being a gun platform months earlier; it was now a garrisoned heap of brick that Charleston mined for metal.
