The South Carolina militia was called into service in February 1863, a sign of how thin the defense of the coast had become once Confederate manpower was drawn to Virginia and Tennessee. Charleston would be defended in 1863 largely by artillerists, engineers, and troops borrowed from Georgia.

“General Finegan reports ten regiments, at least one mounted, of enemy in his front. Am re-enforcing Finegan to utmost practicable extent.” The troops came from Charleston and Savannah, and they arrived in time.
