By mid-February the Confederate government at Montgomery had resolved to take the Charleston batteries out of state hands. On 1 March it assumed control of military affairs at Charleston, and on 3 March Brigadier General G. T. Beauregard — Louisiana-born, Charleston’s own by adoption thereafter — took command.

Captain Reddy with two officers and fifty men of the 21st South Carolina relieved the last of Colquitt's brigade. No change of importance in the fleet. The fort's garrison in any given week might be South Carolinians, Georgians, or both.
