Reorganizing three districts

Special Orders No. 263 required a redisposition of the troops in the Second, Third and Sixth Military Districts. As the coast quieted after Morris Island, Charleston rebalanced its garrison for a long defensive winter.

The Tulifinny and Devaux’s Neck

Federal troops from Hilton Head, including Black regiments and a naval brigade, pushed inland toward the Charleston and Savannah Railroad at Devaux’s Neck and the Tulifinny Crossroads. They got within artillery range of the track and no further. The railroad was cut two months later, from the other direction.
