The year ends at Port Royal Ferry

A joint Federal attack on the Confederate troops at Port Royal Ferry opened on the last day of 1861 and ran into the new year. The year that began with the Star of the West ended with a Union army sixty miles from Charleston and a blockade the port had already learned to live with.

The bombardment of Fort Sumter closes the year

The Official Records date the great bombardment of Fort Sumter from 17 August to 31 December 1863. In those four and a half months the fort was struck by something on the order of forty-six thousand projectiles and reduced to a mound of brick and sand. It was still garrisoned on the morning of 1 January 1864.
