From the monitor Catskill off Morris Island: the night’s picket consisted of the monitors Catskill and Nahant, the tugs Dandelion and Clover, and six boats. “The night was still, with clear moonlight. At midnight Fort Moultrie” and the harbor batteries opened.

Federal boats’ crews were captured in Charleston Harbor. Even in the last winter of the siege, the harbor at night was contested by rowboats — pickets, deserters, torpedo parties and men going out to the fort.
