An indorsement by command of General Beauregard. In the middle of the heaviest bombardment yet fired at an American fort, the department’s business still moved by referral, indorsement and reply.

Experiments on Morris Island: 30-pounder Parrott projectiles fired into a sap-roller, the “constants of work” measured for one man for one hour in a trench, and the penetration of rifle balls tested against wet sand, dry sand, fascines, pine planks and palmetto logs. The siege of Charleston was also a laboratory, and its findings were still being cited fifty years later.
