Bright moonlight again, and no advance attempted. Lieutenant Colonel Purviance of the 85th Pennsylvania, commanding the special guard of the advanced trenches, was killed during his tour of duty by one of the Federals’ own shells bursting prematurely. Fuzes were a real and constant hazard on both sides of this siege.

“Ten Parrott shells fired at the fort last night, none of which struck; 39 columbiads, of which 7 missed. Two negroes killed.” The people repairing Fort Sumter were on its parapets at night, which is when the fort was shelled.
