The sandbags give out

The revetting of the second parallel was failing: dry sand running out of bags torn by the guns’ blast and by the trench guard digging in for shelter from the sun and the night air. Many of the failing bags, Brooks suspected, had already been used once in the Folly Island batteries and were now serving a second time for want of better.

An 8-inch Parrott bursts at Gregg

“Forty shots fired at fort to-day, 2 missed; 42 mortar shells, 15 missed. Work going on at Swamp Battery and on the left of middle battery. Eight-inch at Gregg burst.” The heavy rifles wore out and blew up on a schedule of their own.
