Two reports from Fort Sumter on the last day of April 1864: 213 shells fired at the fort the previous day, and 142 during this one, of which 93 missed. No change observed in the fleet. The third year of the bombardment closed exactly as the first two had.

General Beauregard was superseded in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida by Major General Samuel Jones and ordered to Virginia. He had commanded at Charleston from September 1862, through the ironclad attack, Morris Island, the siege of Sumter and the opening of the bombardment. The city held for ten more months without him.
