With the fort taken and the garrison gone, Charleston spent late April 1861 sending regiments to Virginia. The volunteers who had crowded the harbor batteries in the spring were on trains north by summer, and the defense of the city passed to artillerists, engineers and reserves — which is how it would be held for the next four years.
