The gunboat USS Commodore McDonough engaged a Confederate battery in the lowcountry waterways — the recurring hazard of this coast, where a section of field artillery run down to a marsh bank at night could cripple a warship in the morning.

Fourteen shots were fired at the fort since the last report, five passing over. Two additional war vessels had appeared outside the bar. Whatever the fleet did, the fort noticed, and Charleston knew within an hour by signal flag.
